New Cuban coffee, cigar shop to open near Castillo de San Marco in St. Augustine
Between the old schoolhouse and Castillo de San Marco, a new third-wave coffee shop is set to open in St. Augustine.
City Perks Coffee at Fort Alley, owned by Karen and Michael Cox, will feature Cuban-themed cigars, coffee, wine, beer, icees and more when it opens in mid-May.
“You will have an experience when walk in our store,” Karen Cox said. “You’ll feel that old Cuba feel. It’s not going to be just a coffee shop.”
The 2,100-square-foot location at 15 St. George St. will have about 20 staff members and about 30 seats. Along with what the team describes as the largest humidor in Northeast Florida, City Perks will have a heavy emphasis on cold brew coffees. Karen and Michael Cox have been working in the space for a while: they own Stoggy’s Smoke Shop nearby at 6 St. George St. and owned a coffee shop in the past as well.
“We want to have a name for ourselves in third-wave coffee,” said lead barista Eli Jeppesen. “Our menu board right now is a wall of specials. There’s espresso shots with different flavors, frozen drinks and hot latte arts. We’re also going to do espresso martinis with different flavors.”
